The Departure Lounge

Because talking about death makes life easier.

With death the final destination for us all, we conceived and developed an installation inspired by the idea of travel and journeys – highlighting the fact that like all trips, the experience can be better or worse depending on how informed and prepared we are. The Departure Lounge design took inspiration from classic airport tropes, with suitcases filled with people’s end of life experiences, and departure gates where visitors have the opportunity to think about the way they want to experience and discuss death with their loved ones.

The Departure Lounge is a public installation that encourages people to talk about death, dying and what it means to have a good death. It is staffed by , doctors and hospice workers with experience of death and dying and was based in the Halifax Central Library.

Where: The Atrium of Halifax Central Library

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday – Thursday 9:30 AM – 9:00 PM
