POSITION TITLE: Casual Housekeeper
REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager
HOURS OF WORK: Weekends 9am -1pm and relief in the absence of full time Housekeeper (8hr. days 7am – 3pm)

REMUNERATION: $15.00 per hour

Primary function of the Position:

Hospice Halifax is a compassionate and supportive community of staff members, volunteers and donors dedicated to making dying and living as comfortable and meaningful as possible at the end of life. In accordance with Hospice plans and policies, the Housekeeper will work in partnership with the Care Team Assistants, Facilities Manager, volunteers and other Hospice staff to maintain a safe, clean and attractive environment for patients and their families.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • General vacuuming, sweeping, mopping and cleaning the Hospice (patient rooms, common space, staff room, staff offices, kitchens, great room, meeting rooms, laundry areas, etc.) using appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Cleaning the patient, staff and public bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, commodes and garbage.
  • Cleaning walls, windows and dusting.
  • Collecting garbage, recycling and waste, cleaning the compost room.
  • Completing assigned scheduled cleaning.
  • Replenishing supplies such as soap, paper towel, toilet tissue and gloves.
  • Completing forms for damaged equipment, property and supplies.
  • Preparing cleaning products by following proper procedures.
  • In the absence of the Facilities Manager, assumes responsibility for meeting the laundry delivery truck and putting out the garbage/compost bins for pick up.
  • Other duties as may be assigned for effective operation of the Hospice.

Qualifications and Experience

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1year experience in housekeeping/laundry duties in a long term care/small options facility.
  • Mature, responsible individual with a strong desire to support the work of Hospice Halifax and become a dedicated staff team member.
  • Desire to do what it takes to ensure a welcoming, clean and safe environment for patients and their families.
  • Must be able to follow written or oral instructions.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with a warm, compassionate and caring attitude.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be open-minded, resourceful and flexible in problem solving. 
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision and to participate as a fully cooperative team member.
  • Organized, flexible and capable of operating related equipment.
  • Physically able to perform the duties of the position. Must be able to safely lift 30 lbs.

  • Abides by all Hospice policies and maintains confidentiality of patient/family and Hospice information.

Position Title:   Casual Food Services Assistant 
Reports To: Food Services Manager or Coordinator
Remuneration: $17.00/hr

Primary Function of the Position

The Food Services Assistant is responsible for preparation and delivery of food services programs to Hospice patients, guests and staff in the absence of the Food Services Manager/Coordinator and also to assist with in-house catered events.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In the absence of the Food Services Manager and Coordinator, the Food Services Assistant:

  • Meets with patients to determine the patient’s preferences and desires for food service that day.
  • Short order cooking for breakfast and/or lunch as requested by the patient. 
  • Maintains the refreshment centre in the family kitchen, replenishing coffee, tea and baked goods as necessary and ensuring adequate supplies are available for use. 
  • As per the established plan of the Food Services Manager, delivers previously prepared lunch and supper for the patients.
  • Checks family and patient refrigerators daily and removes and discards outdated or unlabelled food.
  • Supports volunteers in the main kitchen.
  • Records daily temperature checks on all refrigerators and freezers.
  • Upholds the utmost standards in food safety, and maintaining currency on food safety requirements.
  • Makes recommendations to the Food Service Manager on improving food service programs, kitchen facilities and equipment to enhance quality, efficiency, effectiveness and safety.
  • Assists with preparation and food service for internal catered events.
  • Additional duties as required.

Qualifications 

  • A background in health care or a desire to work with patients and families in a hospice setting 
  • Experience with food preparation and short order cooking
  • Training in food safety and a current food safety certificate a must
  • Must be comfortable talking with patients and their families
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and team-building skills with a warm, compassionate and caring attitude
  • Experience supervising others an asset
  • Experience providing food services to palliative care patients an asset.
  • Proven strong organizational skills

Additional Requirements:

  • Supports efforts at reducing, recycling and reusing where appropriate
  • May provide general supervision of volunteers on a daily basis 
  • Participates in Hospice fundraising activities (e.g. Hike for Hospice)
  • Is expected to help out in other areas of the Hospice as necessary (e.g. cleaning up spills, maintaining a clean and tidy family kitchen, etc.)
  • Represents Hospice Halifax in the community.
