What we are Reading, Watching and Listening to

We believe knowledge strengthens our community. Education and awareness about end of life care options can help give patients, families, volunteers, community members, and donors peace of mind surrounding death.

Each quarter of 2023 various members of our team will be sharing any grief related content they have been consuming, from movies to books, podcasts and more – we hope to add some of the things we love to your TBR list.

Our top play

Okay – we may be a bit biased with this first one. Incase you missed it Mackenzie and Kate from the Hospice Halifax team were featured on the Canadian Love Map in December. They discuss the care we give at Hospice Halifax and the amazing work our team does here.

What’s Your Grief? Lists to Help you Through Any Loss

After a decade of writing online articles for What’s Your Grief they put together a book for people experiencing any type of loss.

This book discusses some of the most common grief experiences and breaks down psychological concepts to help you understand your thoughts and emotions. It also shares useful coping tools, and helps the reader reflect on their unique relationship with grief and loss.

Under the Whispering Door

There is so much to love about Under the Whispering Door. It is a story filled with kind people who show that compassion is a form of strength. TJ Klune shows an understanding that grief and death never truly leave you.

Under the Whispering Door is a contemporary fantasy with TJ Klune’s signature “quirk and charm” (PW) about a ghost who refuses to cross over and the love he finds in doing so.

End Well Podcast

Each week, you’ll hear thought-provoking talks from relationship experts, death doulas, nurses, comedians, and more who give us permission to break free from old thinking that says you’re either sick or well, loving or leaving, strong or vulnerable. Learn why having a healthy relationship with dying is the first step towards having a more joyous relationship with living.

Terrible, Thanks For Asking

It’s a question we ask (and get asked) all the time: “How are you?” And normally we just respond with “Fine!” even if we’re totally dying inside, so everyone can go about their day.

But it’s not always all that fine, is it?

“Terrible, Thanks For Asking” is a show by author Nora McInerny that lets real people get real honest about how they’re really doing. It’s sometimes sad, sometimes funny, and almost always both

Spoiler Alert!
After asking for a palliative care consult, the patient and family’s frustration about lack of communication and compassion during their hospital experience was eased. The empathy and clear communication from the palliative care physician provided space for the patient and family to process before they made further decisions.
